Important

Hard disk, recording or file lost problems?
For the following problems :
- recording problems (records stops before the end)
- automatic PVR reboot
- lost of files
- unable to access PVR HDD from Windows

In all of these case, you probably didn't respect the minimum process requirements:
1. Format the main HDD partition in FAT32 "modified" from the "PC
2. Format again the HDD without doing anything else from the PVR by menu "Parameters\PVR Control\Disk Tools\Format Hard Disk"
3. Disable the Windows scandisk (or chkdsk) from Windows on the PVR HDD
4. Disable the Windows recycle bin on the PVR HDD
5. Disable the Windows system restoration on the PVR HDD

If you don't respect these conditions, dooner or later you're going to have some problems!
Quick explanation: PVR-800 uses a FAT32 modified parition to be able to store large files (greater than 4Go - maximum size allowed for files on "simple" FAT32). This is why the second format with PVR is mandatory.
Don't format only from the PVR too, you'll have problems later...

Please have a look in this FAQ, to know how to to format the HDD from Windows.
If the PVR-800 is blocked, yo can try to disconnect from line current during few seconds and connect it again.
Especially never launch software such as "scandisk" from Windows on the PVR-800 HDD, you'll always obtain bad results afterward and be obliged to begin again formating from scratch.
Do not insert a Windows formated disk (NTFS or other), that contains any data, in the PVR, all data could be lost!

Overviews

   Where to buy the PVR?
On Internet, european people can buy it at least at Pixmania.
You can check for other retailers on official Sigmatek site here.

   Can PVR record on DVD?
NO, the PVR-800 and PVR-820 cannot record on DVD, only on HDD!
The Sigmatek PVR-880, foreseen for later, will be provided with a DVD burner.

What are differences between PVR-800 and PVR-820?
The only difference between the 2 PVR is the second scart present on the PVR-820 model (one for input, the other for output).
On PVR-800, the scart input/output is mixed.
Note: don't try to install a PVR-800 firmware on PVR-820 (and vice-versa), it won't work.

   What is the Time-Shift?
Time-Shift function allows pausing a show on TV, and play it again later without loosing anything. The broadcasting is made in recording and you can fast forward to catch up the live show.
This is amazing: you manage the time!
A good use of this feature is to go back to see again anything you want (soccer goals, etc.).
The maximum limit of time you can pause the Live TV is defined to 60 minutes. Spent this period, you'll miss something.

What is the reference of the internal battery?
If the battery seems to be "dead", then you could change it. BUT, you must contact Sigmatek first not to loose your garanty (see section "Contacts" from this site).
The reference is: Lithium Battery 3V / Model CR2032
Thanks to Vincesoo for information.

Technical questions - Firmware / Region Free / Support / Burning / Remote Control

How to best burn my supports for the player?
You have to check these options (all burning software should have these options):
• No multession
• Filename width: ISO Level 2 (35 characters) - PVR-800 will display only 8 or 12 characters max
• Format: Mode 1
• Character set: ISO 9660
• Action: Finalize support
• Write speed: Do not select the maximum speed if you can (by precaution)
• Write method: Disk-At Once
• Option: "verify written data" (available when burning is launched)
The check allows to be sure to have no problems later.

Please note if you use "low quality" supports, you can have problem when reading.
In this case, you can try to use (info by sylv11) "RecordNow Max", a Nero competitor in the world of burning.
You can test it if you have any problem.

You need to pay attention to the write speed.
More the speed is high, more you're going to have reading problem, write errors and the longevity will be reduced.
A good average is between x8 and x16. This is applicable to all supports.
And try to use and burn "quickly" (quickly means to burn them without waiting 1 year after buying them) your supports, the quality degrades in time of non-use. Thanks at Wolf83 for those remarks.

Which CD/DVD supports to choose for my player?
Note: If you have any problem and if the support seems to be compatible, then try to burn it at lower speed.
To consult the wide list of supports tested or to post your own test, please use the forum.

Are DVD+R9 (DL = Double Layer) supported?
Yes, it seems to, it will be necessary to test more, but I have already tested a copy of my DVD #1 of "The Return of the King" (long version).
Copied on DVD+R DL Verbatim Datalife Plus (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media) 2.4x, burned at 4x with Nero 6.6.0.3.
I have ripped the tracks with DVDShrink without compression, keeping all items (menus, etc.) ... 7,45 Gb burned.
Result: no problem, the DVD is well recognized and played up to the end.

How to change player region (region free)?
The player is originaly region free (zone 0 is set).
But since the firmware v.2.12, you can choose manually the region you want to set from the "Setup":
- Press "Setup" on remote control
- Menu "Setup / DVD Region": then here choose "Region 0" (this entry is at the end of the list after the entry "Region 6") or another region you want to set.

Which code can I use with my OneForAll remote control?
These OneForAll remote control can be used to replace the Sigmatek PVR-800/820 remote control too using the manufacturer code from AKI.
The code is 0718 (thanks to Divric).
With the code 0490 (thanks to Olivier Fischer) it does not work well, but you can programmatically set some keys to make them working with your PVR-800.
You can send too the remote control to OneForAll support to let them create a new code for this specific Sigmatek remote control.
If you want to discuss this in our forum, click here (in french but you can speak english).

Technical questions - HDD, removable rack, partitionning, formating, access to files

How to get the second removable rack for my PC?
The response is clear: Sigmatek provides to the retailers the second rack and it has to be shipped with the Sigmatek PVR-800/PVR-820.
If your retailer does not ship the second rack, then contact him and tell him he has to send it.
Please do not contact Sigmatek for this problem. If it's necessary, it's the retailer that will get in touch with Sigmatek.
But if you want to buy another rack for any reason, then you can contact Sigmatek to ask them price for delivery in your country.

How to get another compatible rack?
An english user, Noon found a compatible rack in Switzerland.
The rack model is "Terra Mobil Rack DMA-13".
The web site Byte-Line is in Switzerland and can deliver ONLY in Switzerland: DMA-13-IR or here for DMA-13.
You can request a new rack from Sigmatek directly, but you will pay an expensive postal charge from France.

Which HDD choose for my PVR-800?
At the moment, the only official recommendation to be respected is the following one: no SEAGATE disk!
With Seagate disks, other similar players feel the same problem of compatibility. You could not have any problem with Seagate, but if you have to buy a disk especially for Sigmatek PVR-800/820, then prefer another brand, except opposite recommendations.
I remind only the IDE (PATA) disks can be used, not the SATA (unless you get a SATA->PATA converter).
For the moment, the maximum capacity validated is 300Gb.
As you could see in the list in forum, some Western Digital disks do not work, so be careful! I advise you to rely on users feedback!
To consult or feed the list of HDD tested jump to the forum here! (even if it's in french, you can just write if your HDD works or not as a response in the topic).

Overviews and limitations with PVR-800, Windows98/XP and FAT32
Overviews and constraints on the PVR-800 :
  • it can access only one partition formatted in FAT32 from Windows/DOS then from itself (menu "Format")
Note: if there are some more than one partition, the others will not be accessible.
  • it can't partition a HD, you have to partition HDD before installation, from a PC with "FDisk", Windows 98, "Partition Magic" or "Paragon Disk Manager"
Note: if you want to use a bootable floppy disk, then (check this).
  • it can format a partition in FAT32
Note: it uses a modified version of FAT32 which allows to record files larger than 4Gb
  • the largest partition tested and correctly working is about 300Gb

  • Overviews and constraints for Windows XP :
  • it can't format partition greater than 32Gb
Note: this limit is imposed to favor the use of NTFS.
  • it'll be able to access and read partitions greater than 32Gb (until 2Tb)
  • it can't access files larger than 4Gb on a FAT32 partition
Note: you'll have to use the software "PVRDiskUtil" to get back these files on a formatted disk in NTFS under Windows.

  • Overviews and constraints for Windows 98 :
  • it can format and access a partition in FAT32 with a size greater than 32Gb
  • it can't access and get back files when the file size is greater than 4Gb
Note: its FAT32 doesn't accept large files and Win98 doesn't manage NTFS partitions.
  • using USB, it won't be able to access disk if special drivers are not installed (click here to download drivers)

  • FAT32 constraints under Windows :
  • the maximum size of each file can't excess 4Gb (PVR-800 use a modified "FAT32" partition to create and read these kind of files)
  • Windows 98/XP won't be able to access these files, you'll have to use "PVRDiskUtil" to access them (under Windows XP)
  • the maximum size of a FAT32 partition is 2Tb (not easy to reach for the moment)

How the disk need to be partitioned and formatted?
Any HDD must be partitioned to be useful by an operating system. To partition it, means defining parts as drives.
For the PVR-800, there is a special way to do not have problem in the future: the partition must be created and formatted under Windows a first time, then must be formated a second time by the PVR-800 itself.
If you don't respect this "rule", you should expect to get some problems later (can't access files from Windows, loss of data, etc.).

PVR-800 can only read the first partition of a disk formatted in FAT32. So you don't have to create multiple partitions on your disk.
Furthermore, once partitioned, do not try to format your disk under Windows XP (using explorer), it won't accept to do this if the partition is greater than 32Gb and will suggest to use NTFS format (not supported by PVR-800).
You'll be able to format it in FAT32 with the format command (from "DOS"), Partition Magic 8, Paragon Disk Manager or any other tools (but don't format it in first by the PVR-800).

The logic way to respect with a news disk is:
    • to partition disk under Windows or DOS (Partition Magic or FDisk)
    • to format disk under Windows or DOS in FAT32 format (Partition Magic or "Format" command)
    • to format a new time the disk from PVR-800 (menu "Setup"...)

To partition and format disk using "FDisk" and "Format" with a floppy disk, click here.
    To format HDD from PVR-800:
    - "Setup" button from remote control
    - menu "Setup Menu" \ "PVR Control" \ "Disk Tools" \"Format Hard Disk"

Note: do not try to format the disk thru the USB connexion under Windows, the disk won't be recognize anymore by the PVR-800 (looping "HELLO" on boot).

How to prepare your IDE HDD (using "FDisk" and "Format" under DOS)?
    - Connect your disk on a IDE cable in master or slave according to your current configuration
    - Download the Windows ME boot disk here or there (this "FDisk" allows creation of large partitions).
    Thanks to the site "poloastucien".
    - When you get the file, insert a blank floopy in your drive and launch the program, it's going to be prepared
    - Leave the floppy in the drive and re-boot, your computer should boot on the floppy
If it's not the case, you have to activate this function in the BIOS (this is BIOS dependant)
    - A menu is displayed, choose the second entry (with CD-ROM coverage, this allows too to access the "Format" command).
    - When booting is finished you see "A:"
    - Enter "FDISK" then press "Enter"
    - FDisk asks a first question about consideration of large disks, answer "O" (yes in french) and press "Enter"
    - If FDisk asks you another question about NTFS partitions, answer "O" (yes) again, and you should access the main menu
    - If you have several HDD installed, and the one you want to format is not the main one, then you should switch pressing "5" to choose another drive selecting the good one in the given list
    - If your disk is already partitioned and formatted in NTFS for example, you have to delete first this partition (ATTENTION you're going to loose any existing data, please have a long check before doing this) by the menu entry "3" then the entry "4"
    - Create now the new "DOS" partition by the menu entry "1", then again "1" to create a main DOS partition. The partition is going to be created...
    - Enter the commande "FORMAT X:" (where X is the letter associated to your driver), and it's going to be formatted in FAT32
=> When it's finished, switch off the PC, unmount disk, install it in the removable rack (if not already done) without forget to set the jumper to Master position and format it a second time in the PVR-800 (click here).

You are now ready to use your PVR-800.

Is it possible to use PartitionMagic 8 to format the PVR HDD?
Yes it is possible and even recommended if you have this software.
You'll be able to format the HDD using FAT32 without the limit of 32Go imposed by Windows XP.
    - Launch PartitionMagic
    - Select the partition you want to format (do not select another partition !!)
    - Select the menu "Partition\Format"
    - Choose the partition type "FAT32", give it a short name and validate this choice
    - Finally click on "Apply" button in the bottom left corner of the main Windows and wait...
At the end of process, don't forget to format again the HDD using the PVR by the menu "Setup menu\PVR Control\Disk Tools\Format".

How to prepare your 250Gb HDD (or more) using the maximum size?
According to users feedback, you have 2 different ways:
    1) Use Paragon Disk Manager
First, to do not have any problems of instability or conflicts, it's necessary to be under Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Paragon Disk Manager 5.5!
This software allows to partition and format in FAT32 your HDD easily (tested by Claude E., thanks to him).
On the other hand, another user (Greg16S) took time to test also this application and noted slowings down at PVR-800 boot time.
You should take the time to try it yourself to see it's good for you or not.
Paragon Disk manager : official site.

    2) Use Partition Magic 8
Greg16s took advantage of the totality of his HDD by "fiddling" with Partition Magic 8.
    - Creation of a first partition of 196Gb + format in FAT32
    - Creation of a second partition using free space + format in FAT32
    - Merge the second partition with the first one
=> The second partition will be available in a first partition directory. And now all disk space can be used.

How to access to HDD files from a PC (and vice versa)?
    3 ways are available:

    1. Use removable rack (IDE connexion)
The disk must be positionned to "master" mode in PVR-800, so in theory, your disk should be the first disk of the second IDE cable in your PC.
If your rack is mounted in your PC, it must be connected at the end of the IDE cable if you let it to master mode.
If it's in slave position, the rack must be connected on the middle of the IDE cable.
If you are obliged to set the position to master in the PVR-800 and slave in the PC, you're obliged too to switch the jumper position of the disk each time.
Note: you can set the rack to master mode and let the disk in its tray to master with a second HDD in your PC in slave mode.
This configuration lets you access to your slave disk even if the main HDD is not plugged.
Thanks to Fred.Eric and Nicolas68 for feedback on this.

Attention: before remove the HDD from the PVR, the PVR-800 MUST BE in stand-by mode.
Same for the PC, do not try to hot plug your IDE HDD, switch it off in first, then plug it! (unless you use IDE/USB adapter).

    2. Direct connexion using USB
If your PC is not too far from the player or if you have a laptop, you can be connected directly by USB. In this case you can see the HDD a new mass storage on your PC (like an USB key).
To activate the "USB" mode you have to:
    - Plug the USB cable from PVR-800 to PC
    - Push "SETUP" button on remote control
    - Go thru menu to: "Setup Menu \ PVR Control \ Disk Tools \ Use USB"
PVR-800 re-boot and become passive. The PC can take control of HDD thru USB and the PVR-800 cannot be used at this moment.
You have to unplugged the cable to reinitialize the PVR-800 "normal".

Under Windows XP, the HDD will be shown automatically, but under Windows 98, it won't be work.
Under Windows 98, if you have already installed an USB key or any device of type "mass storage", maybe the PVR-800 will be recognized.
If it's not the case, you can download and install these drivers.

After drivers installation, you'll see 2 new devices:
    - "USB Mass Storage Device"
    - "Myson-Century CS8818 USB Mass Storage Device"
You can now begin to tranfer your files.

    3. Use the removable rack (IDE) in conjunction with special USB adapter
Here you have an example of adapter IDE=>USB that can be used easily (validated) from Pearl.
This adapter allows to use external connexion without being obliged to find an empty slot in your tower and workaround the "slave/master" problem.

How to copy files which are larger than 4Gb from PVR-800 to PC?
These kind of large files can't be copied from the Windows explorer, because the FAT32 known by Windows XP/98 can't manage these files.
Worse thing, Windows will consider that the file is corrupted and will display an erroneous file size.
Attention: don't launch a "checkdisk" if you don't want your file being truncated to a file size equal to 4Gb.

You can't recover these files from Windows 98 in anyway because you need at least a NTFS partition to store them.
Under Windows XP, you have to use the program "PVRDiskUtil".
    - launch program
    - choose the PVR-800 HDD as the source in the list
    - choose the partition of the disk
    - wait for the program to analyse content of the disk (the files will be displayed on the right panel)
    - select file you want to copy and press "Copy" button
    - select the destination directory and here we go...
At the end of operation, you'll be able to open your file and work on it.

How to copy or move files to another directory than the root one (from PVR-800)?
First thing is to understand than PVR-800 use a different way that we know in oher programs: you have to first select the destination directory, then launch the operation.

    1) From the PC
You can use your PC to move or copy files on PVR-800 by using Windows explorer or PVRDiskUtil program (for files larger than 4Gb).

    2) From the PVR-800
    - go to the destination directory
    - press the "PBC" key on your remote control ("Target Drive/Dir Set" is displayed on screen)
    - go to the directory from which you want to move or copy files
    - select the file with arrow keys
    - press the "OSD" key
    - select "COPY" or "MOVE" and then press "ENTER"

How to connect rack to PC when you don't have any more place in your tower?
    IDE/USB connexion for Sigmatek PVR-800
If you don't have any more space in your tower or if all the IDE devices are connected, you can always connect the rack using USB connection with an adapter.
Here you can find IDE/USB one at Pearl or Wexim.
This solution is not the sexiest but has avantage to be useful. Foresee small one extension lead for the USB.

How to disable the Windows scandisk on PVR HDD?
The Windows Scandisk or checkdisk (chkdsk) corrupts the special FAT32 PVR partition. As it does not recognize this format, it corrects the FAT and at the same time corrupts all files greater than 4Gb. Theses files are then unreadable in their totality because they are truncated.

You have to disable the automatic scandisk, doing the following things: (works on Windows NT4 SP2, Windows 2000 or Windows XP)
    • Track down the letter used by the PVR HDD when connected to Windows
    • Without updating manually the Windows registry, launch "command" (by the Windows menu "Start" \ "Execute") to open a command DOS windows
    • Then enter "chkntfs /x G:" (replace G by the letter of your disk)
    • Then you can check the registry has been modified like this:

    In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
the value "BootExecute" has to been set to: "autocheck autochk /k:G *" (where G is always the letter for your HDD to disable)
This means Windows will continue to autocheck all of your disks except your disk G!

If you want to reverse this action:
    - just update manually the registry and set "autocheck autochk *" which is the default value
    - or launch the command windows and enter "chkntfs /d"

Technical questions - HDD, Time-Shift, recording and reading

How to stop Time-Shift in Live Video mode?
It is not possible, we could say: "it's not a bug, it's a feature".
As soon as the the Live Video mode is activated, ("Live TV" on remote control), auto-recording of the source is activated. If you stop the recording (using "STOP" key), you leave too the Live Video mode and go back to SmartNavi.

How to find the file corresponding to Time-Shift recording?
Using the PVR-800 menu (SmartNavi), you won't be able to see it. It's an hidden file named "SYS.DAT" present on HDD root. You can get it from your PC, the same way you get other big files, using "PVRDiskUtil".
If your PC does not play DAT file with multimedia player, rename it to "SYS.MPG" and you'll be able to play it using your favorite media application.
Thanks to filipcharvey for reporting this information.

How to be faster during fast forward/backward in the Time-Shift record?
If you just press the left or right arrow keys, you make a jump of 10 secs in the movie. If you can hold your finger on arrow keys, then the video forward about 1 minute for each seconde you hold the key. So, with about a maximum of 60s, you browsed the totality of your Time-Shift record. This is faster than the maximum default speed: x8.

How to record a DVD on HDD?
In theory, it's possible to record direclty a DVD playing it and pressing "REC" key on remote control.
Unfortunately, for the moment, some jerks appear. Severals users don't have any problems, so we have to understand why. Thanks to all people for searching, and mainly to Sharknoir, Outitec, Claude E., etc... let us continue!

1st solution: recording from DVD to PVR
    - To have sound: SETUP -> Audio -> Audio Out -> Analogic
    - To have color video: SETUP -> PVR Control -> Source Format -> Auto
    - But, jerks appear!
You have to set the record quality to the maximum (XP) to have a faithful reproduction. Don't forget you'll get a large final file with MPEG2 for video and MP2 for audio (stereo). The Macrovision protection is not activated! Launch recording with the "REC" key from remote control.

2nd solution: recording from external DVD player
This solution is a workaround for the jerks, but you have to own a second DVD player.
    - plug external DVD with S-Video cable on PVR-800 S-Video input
    - plug the 2 RCA cables (stereo) on PVR-800 Audio1 input source
    Keep the same previous configuration:
    - To have sound: SETUP -> Audio -> Audio Out -> Analogic
    - To have color video: SETUP -> PVR Control -> Source Format -> Auto
    - And setup the source: SETUP -> PVR Control -> Input Source -> S-Video
You have to set the record quality to the maximum (XP) to have a faithful reproduction. Don't forget you'll get a large final file with MPEG2 for video and MP2 for audio (stereo). You need to have an external DVD player with Macrovision set to OFF, else visual problems will occured during recording. Launch playing on external DVD and recording from PVR-800 by the "REC" key from remote control.

3rd solution: recording/playing from a DVD rip made on PC
You can rip your DVD on PC and copy VOB files on HDD.:
    - Use DVDDecrypter (guide here: Step 2.1 to 2.10) to rip the DVD. You get IFO and VOB files.
    - Copy these files in directory of PVR-800 HDD
    - Launch from this directory the first VOB file
The chain with the other VOB is made in a transparent way.
The playback is perfect and you keep a Dolby Digital or DTS audio part if you kep them during ripping.

Important note if you can't hear english audio stream in english with this last solution:
PVR-800 keep the audio track associated to the ID "0x80" from the VOBs. If the sound of this track is in english, it's OK, else you'll hear another language.
It's, at present, not possible to switch the audio language from PVR-800 in this configuration. So you have to use a tip and I quote the manipulations tested and validated by Joshua (thanks to him!) :
In DVD Decrypter "stream processing" part:
    - enable "stream processing" following the french guide here
    - check "0xE0" for the video
    - check AC3 or DTS english audio stream "0x81"
    - uncheck all others streams ("0x80" included)
    - and to finish, you have to allocate the english stream to "0x80" choosing the direct copy to let the english stream becoming the first audio stream!
It should work after that and thank you again to Joshua!

How to stop a scheduled record already started?
It is not possible to stop a scheduled recording "normaly". So to work around this, you have to go to "Smartnavi" and press the "STOP" key. This will stop the current recording without losing the already recorded data.
Be careful, the complete stop of the player will provoke the loss of the total current recording.

How to record movie elsewhere than in the root folder?
You have to select the target folder. You have to:
    - go to the destination directory
    - press the "PBC" key on your remote control ("Target Drive/Dir Set" is displayed on screen)
Now, whatever you record, it will be saved in the new directory. But this is not working for time-recording, because this information is not saved between 2 sessions (switch on/off).

Is it possible to record VHS tapes from VCR to PVR-800?
Yes it is possible keeping the same quality as the original source. You have to connect the VCR using the following schema and set the PVR parameters like:
    - Setup menu/Preferences/TV Type => PAL
    - Setup menu/PVR Control/Input Source => AV2
    - Setup menu/PVR Control/Source Format => SECAM or AUTO (PAL) (it depends of your VCR and records)
You can choose a recording quality equal to XP or SP.

How to schedule the end of a live recording?
This is possible from the firmware 2.16. You just have to press several times the "REC" key of the remonte control to set the record duration by 30 minutes step until 180 minutes max.

Technical questions - TV Tuner, reception, channels, adjustment

What is the good setup to receive TV channels?
    1) Good quality input/Output coaxial cables (Antenna -> RF IN and RF OUT -> TV) to avoid losses of signal.

    2) Setup PVR-800 as follows:
    For France:
    - Setup Menu -> Preferences
      -> TV Type : PAL
      -> Video Output : S-Video
    - Setup Menu -> PVR Control
      -> Input Source : Tuner
-> Source Format : SECAM (or AUTO (PAL) since the 2.16 version)
      -> Tuner Format : SECAM L
For other countries, please send me a message to faq.pvr800@sigmatek-players.com if you find good parameters.
    Thanks in advance.

    3) You have to plug your HDD in the PVR, else you're going to have an error message displayed on TV "HDD not found".
And the PVR need the HDD to save a file named "CH_NAME.AKI". This file contains channels information and is saved on HDD root (and is invisible).

    4) To launch the automatic channel scan you have to go to:
Setup / Parameters / PVR Control / Tuner Control / Auto Scan.
Important: the menu "Tuner Control" is not visible directly and is low in the list. You have to use the down arrow key to find the entry.

How to refine my TV channels?
If you have already followed the recommendations to have a good reception and if one or several channels do not belong to the best of their reception, you can refine them.
To refine reception, tou have to:
    - switch to "Live Vidéo" mode
    - choose the chanel to refine
    - press the key "STEP"; "FINE TUNE MODE" is displayed
    - use the arrow keys "<" and ">" to refine reception
    - press "STEP" to save your selection and go out
    [ Back to top ]

       How to rename a channel?
To change a channel name for someting more understandable, just:
    - launch the "Live Video" mode
    - type "MENU" on remote control (not the "TITLE" key which is not made for the same feature)
A virtual keyboard is now displayed
    - enter the new name of your channel
    - validate pressing "STOP" key to save your change (or press "MENU" to cancel change)

How to add a channel manually?
You have to know the exact frequency of the channel to add.
For example, if the frequency is 176.72 Mhz (TF1 - Antibes - France), so you:
    - switch to "Live Video" mode
    - press the "GOTO" key on remote control
    - type the frequency like: 17672
The channel is going to be added automatically in the channels list.
Please note as it is not possible to remove a channel, if you missed the right frequency, you can refine it or remove the channel virtually.

       How to remove a channel?
It is not possible to really removed a registered channel. But, you can remove it "virtually" by deactivating it.
    - go to "Setup"
    - menu "Parameters \ PVR Control \ Tuner Control \ Channel Setup" => the channel list is displayed
    - go to the channel to remove using arrow keys
    - press the "Enter" key => a cross appears in front of the name
    - go to "Done" button on screen and validate your choice => the channel won't be available anymore.

Which frequency step is used in PVR-800 for the tuner?
The frequency step for the embedded tuner is fixed to 62.5 Khz (or 0.06 Mhz when you enter frequency manually). Please note, this frequency step is the one frequently used in tuners embedded in this kind of material.

How to know the actual channel frequency?
When "Live video" mode is active, just press the "RESUME" key and the frequency is displayed on TV.

How to sort differently my channels?
To sort channels, you should rename them before, else it is not really possible to do this job.
    When renamed, follow these actions:
    - go to "Setup"
    - menu "Parameters \ PVR Control \ Tuner Control \ Channel Setup" => the channel list is displayed
    - go to the channel to remove using arrow keys
    - press "VOL+" to move the channel up and "VOL-" to move it down!
    - go to "Done" button on screen and validate your choice => the channels will be sorted according to your choice.

How to get and save channels from 2 different sources?
At present, it is impossible to get and save channels from 2 different sources (i.e: from SECAL L and PAL BG simultaneously). PVR can only save channels from one source at the same time. If you set another source, then the previous saved channels will be replaced by new ones. As PVR saves channels data on one file (CH_NAME.AKI), you can try to use 2 differents disks.
This is not useful, but this is the only workaround for the moment. An improvement has been requested and "could" be integrated in a next firmware... to be continued!

Does the tuner is mono or stereo?
The tuner, from its references, seems to be stereo, but do not integrate a NICAM decoder. The result is a MONO reception on the French aerial channels. Thanks to schwartz for information.

Technical questions - File playing (DivX, MP3, JPEG, MPEG, etc...)

How to read DAT file recorded with PVR-800 on PC or on other player?
The DAT files are MPEG2 video files format and MP2 (MPEG-1 Layer 2) for the audio part (for the XP quality mode). On your PC, if DAT files are not associated with your media player, you can just rename the file extension to ".MPG" (better) or ".MPEG". ".MPG" file will be read on other player or on PVR-800.

Please note: under Windows, it's possible you can't really rename correctly the file extension because Windows hides some files extensions. In this case, if you try to add the extension ".MPG", the file will stay in ".DAT" format. To workaround this, you have to:
    - Open the Windows file explorer
    - Open the menu "Tools\Folders options..." (not sure of this because my Windows is french)
    - Go to "Display" tab
    - and unckeck the box which contain something like: "Hide file extensions for known file type"

    - maximum file size: 170Kb
    - only latins characters are read (not hebrew, central europe, etc.)
    - the filename should not contains any spaces " ", extra dots "." or undrescores "_".

    To activate a subtitle file:
    - press the "ZOOM" key on remote control to select the subtitle file (a message is written to confirm the selection), then launch AVI file
    - you can now press "SUBTITLE" key to enable or disable the subtitles during playing

How to remove jerks on my XviD movies?
With recent XviD files (version 1.x), there is at least one problem you can remove to be able to read it on your PVR-800 before burning it. You have to remove the XviD NVOP option (Packed Bitstream). To do that, you must use the MPEG4Modifier software from Moitah. It allows to remove this option without reencode your movie.
    1. Download MPEG4Modifier here.
    2. Launch application
    3. Check "Unpack"
    4. In "User Data" part, uncheck "Auto" to enable the lines "xxx00p"
    5. Replace the letter "p" by the letter "n"
    6. Save it and it's finished

    Modifications du PVR-800

Using polystyrene to reduce fan noise!
Here is a mod made by Olivier1 to reduce fan noise almost by 50%. And you keep your garantee!
For the fan under the player, use polystyrene plate of 100 x 100 x 20mm.
Cut the plate like a U all around the fan. Turn it is such way the output is made by the back. Stick it with double-sided adhesive tape.
For the back fan, use another polystyrene plate, thickness of 50mm.
Cut the height to be less larger than the PVR, and cut the width as you can insert the plate between SCART and power-supply.
Make a throat inside the plate (without transpiercing the plate) and stick it with double-sided adhesive tape.

    Known problems

Unable to record, even in "Live Video" mode
Inexplicable problem for the moment (overload of a capacitor, static electricity, etc.). A solution that worked for at least 2 persons: disconnect the PVR-800 from electric current during about 10 seconds and connect it again. Without that the PVR-800 / PVR-820 never wants to record and each time you try recording, everything is blocked.

USB connection to PVR is impossible
The problem is simple: the connection from PC to PVR can't be established. The PC can freeze, with sometimes a BSOD, or nothing happens and no letter is associated to PVR disk.

There are several reasons to this, and you can try the following workaround:
    - if you use an extension lead (USB), change it by another one with better quality and certifed USB 2.0 compliant (thanks to Outi)
    - if there is a network disk mapped, this can prevent PC to mount the PVR disk. Check it by "Start / Execute / cmd" then enter "net use". If you can see network disk, then it could not work, you have to disable these disks (thanks to flop).
    - if the systme can't attribute a letter to the PVR disk, you can go to "Configuration Panel / Computer Management / Disk Management". When the PVR is connected a line is present in the list but a letter is maybe not associated, in this case, right click on the line and choose "Modify the disk letter and directory" then choose a free letter (thanks to yaya23).

How to remove the OSD message displaying time when a DVD/DivX file is played?
This message appears in the top left corner of the screen and displays the elapsed time or time remaining. It should not appear on launched file, this is a bug. For the moment, the only way to remove it is to press the "OSD" key 1 or more time.
With the firmware 2.19 this problem is fixed.

Nothing is displayed in stand-by mode in front of PVR-800?
Yes this is normal, even if you have programmed a timer record, nothing special is displayed. Only the red led is on.

PVR-800 boots slowly, is this normal?
Yes because PVR-800 is like a PC and needs some time to initialize all the components (disk, DVD player, etc.). The speed varies according to the capacity of your HDD, about 20 to 40 secondes.

"HE LO" is displayed instead of "HELLO", normal?
Yes and No, this is for sure a bug happening when the Sigmatek logo is displayed on screen. But there is no other problems linked to this one.

The "GOTO" feature does nothing, normal?
This feature should work on all file type (AVI, MPG, DAT, etc.). So if seems to do not work, it's probably because you didn't enter the right things. You need to type "0110" or "011000" (without forget the first "0") if you want to go at 01h10m in movie, then "ENTER".
Please note, if you try to go over the end, in this case nothing happens.

How to disable the angle mark logo during DVD playing?
This logo indicates that you can press the "ANGLE" key to display another scene view. Generally the DVD display itself another logo, during few seconds, to alert you another angle is available.
You can disable the PVR angle-mark by the Setup, menu "Parameters\General\Angle mark" and choose "OFF".

Where are the menus missing in the Setup (Source Format, etc.)?
It is simple, the menus are under the other menus which you can see in the screen. You just have to use the bottom arrow key to access them.
Moreover, paying it well attention, SmartNavi shows 4 blue or grey arrows at the bottom of the screen, when you can use these arrows they are blue, otherwise grey ;)

Windows tells me the disk is not formatted, why?
The main reason is you have formatted the disk with the PVR-800 and without formatted it previously from Windows or DOS. You have to format it first with Windows, then with the PVR-800 to avoid any problem. Now, you're obliged to begin again the operation: click here for more details !

Windows tells me a file is corrupted, why?
This happens when you try to transfer a file larger than 4Gb.
ATTENTION: don't let Windows launch a "CheckDisk" on your disk, you're going to loose all of your large files. They'll be truncated to 4Gb.

To transfer these files, you have to use the only one known solution: use the program "PVRDiskUtil". It allows transfering large files without errors.
This software was written for a PVR-800 cousin: the NorthQ 7100. I thank the author of unofficial site for this player.

I can't create a partition larger than 196Gb on my disk, how to workaround this limitation?

I can't copy/move my files on disk root, why?
This is normal, because with the PVR-800 you have to choose firstly the destination directory. And by default the destination directory is the root one, so you can't copy/move the files to root and these 2 functions are desactivated.
To copy or move files, please read this FAQ part.

I get "NOT FIND HDD" or "HARD DISK NOT FOUND" error, what can I do?
Several reasons are linked to these messages. The main cause is the PVR-800 does not detect your HDD.
So you have to check all the chain of connexions (cables, disk, motherboard).

    1) Checking disk
Begin to check your disk, it must be positioned to master mode (see jumper on the back panel), no slave or CS modes. All jumper connexions are generally drawn on the disk.
Naturally check if the disk is not "dead". If you have a doubt, try another disk.

    2) Checking disk in the tray
Check if the disk is well connected (power cable and IDE cable), the red line of IDE cable must be connected to pin #1 of the disk.

    3) Checking tray in the rack
Check if the tray is well plugged in the rack. Apply slightly the finger to the front to push it to the maximum.
    There is no sound confirmation.

    4) Checking IDE and power supply cables between rack and motherboard
ATTENTION: it cancels the 1-year garanty
Before opening the PVR-800 to repair it, you must contact Sigmatek first (click here).
Sigmatek will authorize you to open PVR-800 / PVR-820 (if necessary) after giving them your identity and player serial number.
This is mandatory if you want to keep your guaranty!!

    On the picture below:
    - zone #1 represents the back of the system stand where the IDE calbe is connected, it is necessary to verify that it is well connected.
    - Zone #2 represents the bottom of the motherboard, the left connector IDE (on photo) is the one that allows disk connection, the right one serves the DVD drive.
Verify the IDE cable is well connected in the left connector. You can access it without unsettling the motherboard. Touch a metal shell of the PVR-800 before touching internal components (for static electricity). Also check if the power supply connection on the motherbord is well connected. If you can, change the IDE cable. Choose a short and round one.

I get a "failure" error on the disk?
This can happen because if various things: file or folder copy, bad reboot, bad repairing, bad recording, etc.

PVRDiskUtil failed on launch, I get an error on memory address, what can I do?
This application has been developped by an independant developper and now code source is available. It's eaisier to find which error correspond to a message.
But, for this case, It was noticed this error is detected when too many readers of discs / floppy disks / memory cards are connected to the PC. So if you have an USB "all in one" reader connected to your PC, please try to disconnect it and try again.

The quality of reception RF is not so good, what can I do?
A first solution consists in changing the antenna (RF) cable supplied with player. It seems to be the main source of the problem.
To verify if it is guilty, disconnect the 2 connectors arriving and leaving of the PVR-800 (RF-IN and RF-OUT), connect them directly in a way that the cable of the PVR-800 serves simply as extension lead. Look at the result on the TV directly without passing thru the PVR. Compare removing this small extension lead. Compare the results with your original antenna cable and if there is a big difference: quickly get another cable: short, solid connectors and if you can: shielded!

I get "NOT FIND TV TUNER" error, what can I do?
This is probably a manufacturing or assembly defect. The tuner cable (internal) is not connected on mainboard, the connector is disconnected.

ATTENTION: before repairing by yourself this problem you have to contact Sigmatek (click here for details).
Sigmatek will authorize you to open PVR-800 (if necessary) after you give them your identity and player serial number.
This is mandatory if you want to keep your guaranty!!

Then do the following (with the biggest precautions):
    1. Disconnect the PVR-800 from sector and from other electric devices.
    2. Open the PVR-800 by undoing 4 lateral screws and 5 screws rear.
    3. Search for the white connector you should find on the right part of the tuner, under the mainboard. The cable should be close. The tuner is on left corner (see picture here).
    4. Plug the connector in its support on the card under the motherboard (as shown on picture below).
    5. Close all, and try again (you can try it before close all without touching anything inside when the PVR-800 is ON).

I get "HDD not found" error when scanning channels?
This message appears when you try to scan automatically your channels and when the disk is not plugged correctly. You have to connect the disk in the PVR-800 before scanning channels. The PVR-800 creates a file on HDD (hidden file) which contains channels information (name, etc.). This file is named "CH_NAME.AKI" and is stored on root. If you see it from Windows, don't try to play with it or remove it, else you'll be obliged to scan again your channels.
Check here too for HDD connecting problem.

I don't receive any channels, the screen is black or contains lots of pixels?
This is normal. You probably didn't setup correctly the channels reception and the tuner format.
    You should check this here.

I can't play DivX (AVI) files during recording, why?
This is a know limitation of PVR. Even if it is not the same chipsets that do the 2 jobs, if this functionnality was enabled, you could have a lot of jerks during AVI playing (and probably on current record too). So it has been disabled and you can "only" read MPEG files or DVD.

I don't have any sound on TV (using SCART) and I use numeric connexion?
This is normal for the moment. Analogic outputs are disabled when numeric ones are enabled (and vice versa). So you have to switch your connexion mode if you want to hear sound on TV. In Setup, if you set "Audio Out" : "SPDIF/RAW" you won't have any sound on analogic outputs. You have to set "Audio Out" : "Analog" to hear sound on TV using SCART or Stereo/5.1 connexions.

The sound is so bad when using SCART, what can I do?
Generally, it's because you have a bad quality SCART cable.
Try to change it for a good one and it should be better.

I can't hear sound from MP3 audio track in DivX video?
This can happen when the audio stream is badly interpreted, meaning there is a problem on AVI header.
To check that, you can use GSpot. It will give you the encoding bitrate mode (in the bottom right of the "Audio" part): CBR or VBR (written in green on black background). If none mode is lighted, then you just pointed out the problem. You can use the following guide (FR) to rebuild quickly the AVI header and fix the sound problem.
Thanks to Christophe V. for testing and feed-backs.

I can see horizontal lines when watching DVD (as if the video was encrypted)?
This can happen if the "Setup" is not well parameterized. You probably selected the "Multi-System" or "NTSC" mode but your TV does not support these options. To update this parameter, go to "Setup" then "Setup Menu\Preferences\Type TV" and choose "PAL".

I can't hear sound from WMA audio track in DivX video?
For the moment, and in spite of the ESS Vibratto chipset, PVR-800 can't read WMA audio tracks. This probably could be corrected in a future firmware release. You can re-encode your audio stream in MP3 following this guide here (in french).

I can't play more than 2 MP3, after PVR stops reading, why?
This problem has been fixed since the firmware 2.14.
You have to upgrade your firmware to do not have this problem anymore on your player. Please get it from the download page and don't forget to follow the upgrade guide!

I have no more sound when recording from any source?
The cause is not known, but the solution is theorically simple: just disconnect the PVR-800/820 from current line during few minutes, then plug it again and it should work like before.
