Technical questions - Firmware / Region Free / Support / Burning / Remote Control

How to change zone (region free) ?
The Sigmatek XM-330 is already multizone, so you should be able to read all DVD from all region.
But is you have any or if you find the way to access hidden menus, please go to talk about it in the forum.

How to burn correctly my CD/DVD?
You have to check these options (all burning software should have these options):
• No multession
• Filename width: ISO Level 2 (35 characters) - XM-400 will display only 14 characters max
• Format: Mode 1
• Character set: ISO 9660
• Action: Finalize support
• Write speed: Do not select the maximum speed if you can (by precaution)
• Write method: Disk-At Once
• Option: "verify written data" (available when burning is launched)
The check allows to be sure to have no problems later.

Please note if you use "low quality" supports, you can have problem when reading.
In this case, you can try to use (info by sylv11) "RecordNow Max", a Nero competitor in the world of burning. You can test it if you have any problem.

You need to pay attention to the write speed.
More the speed is high, more you're going to have reading problem, write errors and the longevity will be reduced.
A good average is between x8 and x16. This is applicable to all supports.
And try to use and burn "quickly" (quickly means to burn them without waiting 1 year after buying them) your supports, the quality degrades in time of non-use. Thanks at Wolf83 for those remarks.

Which supports can I choose for the player?
If you have any problem and if the support seems to be compatible, then try to burn it at lower speed.
A too high burning speed is often the reason of bad result (thanks to Wolf83 and Ricou for the notice).
Plus, try to avoid using very low priced supports, they are not built to have a long life.
You can report your result in our forum.

Are DVD+R9 (DL = Double Layer) supported?
Yes, it seems to, it will be necessary to test more, but a test has been made with a copy of the DVD #1 of "The Return of the King" (long version). Copied on DVD+R DL Verbatim Datalife Plus (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media) 2.4x, burned at 4x with Nero 6.6.0.3. Tracks have been ripped with DVDShrink without compression, keeping all items (menus, etc.) ... 7,45 Gb burned.
Result: no problem, the DVD is well recognized and played up to the end.

How to know if I need to upgrade the firmware?
As for the moment, the version of installed firmware can't be known, the only way to check if you need to upgrade is just to compare the list of problems fixed by the firmware with your player...
And for the first firmware, check if you have OSD message (time) displayed when you launch an AVI. If yes, then you don't have the last firmware.
Go to firmwares list.

Technical questions - File playing (DivX, MP3, JPEG, MPEG, etc...)

How to read subtitles (SRT, SUB, SMI, SSA) with my AVI files?
The subtitle filenames in format SRT, SUB (text), SUB/IDX (picture), SMI (multilingual) and SSA, to be recognized, must have the same name as its associated AVI file.
Example: "mymovie.avi" and "mymovie.srt"

How are displayed the AVI subtitles?
Subtitles are displayed on 2 lines without automatic carraige return.
If the first line is too large, then the second one is not displayed.
At maximum, 32 characters can be displayed by line, they are white and not shadowed.
With original firmware, special European characters are not displayed, with the first official update, it's ok.

   What about DivX 6?
Yes the DivX 6 is supported but not fully, the player is not certified "divx ultra". So the video codec DivX 6 is supported, the container ".divx" is supported with multiple XSUB subtitles and multi-audio streams, but without meta-tags, menus and chapters handling.

Does the player can read OGG and OGM files?
No, it's not compatible, nor with OGG Vorbis audio file, or OGM audio/video container (with XviD and OGG).
Even if the file is renamed with an AVI extension, the file is visible, but can't be decoded.

Technical questions - Audio and video

Why DTS can't be decoded by player or amplifier?
All DTS audio streams can't be heard from the player, none decoded by the player and none decoded by an external amplifier. So the result is simple : no sound when using a DTS stream.
Listening XM-330 manufacturers, the problem is located between Mediatek (chipset) and DTS company. Probably because royalties have not been payed for DTS licenses...
And there are 2 licenses for DTS (thanks to Ricou): one for decoding and one for sending the stream to amplifier... and it seems Mediatek is not up to date for the twice.

Known problems

   I can't heard voice watching a DivX!
This can happen if you play a DivX file with AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio stream on a stereo output system (like TV).
Please check your player is setup as following:
- Speaker Setup : Downmix / Stereo
- SPDIF Setup : SPDIF output / SPDIF OFF

No sound playing DivX file !
This can happen if your movie is an AVI embedding WMA audio stream. The XM-330 can't read WMA in AVI files, this is a hardware limitation (need more RAM), so it won't be fixed by firmware.
You can recode your audio stream in MP3 if nessary (guide in french).

   No sound using DTS streams!
yes unfortunatly, this is normal and explained here.
